Dogs can hear a low rumbling noise before the actual quake hits; they wake up before the quake actually reaches the surface:

It was a short 4.1 with the epicenter less than a mile away from our house at a depth of ~3.3 miles, which is pretty shallow. Urgh ... things I could do without :-\
